VigilantHalo Interactive Training
Creating an interactive & accessible training experience for warfighters, resulting in 100% increase in retention of domain knowledge usability with the overall system & an increase in sales
This new product that BlueHalo created was a complicated mish-mash of capabilities that only the engineers within the product portfolio understood and it wasn’t selling. I created two types of training to create an immersive training experience to reduce the lift for BD members when communicating with interested parties.

Summary
VigilantHalo integrates data processing, fusion tracking, and communications, enabling operators to monitor and separate air traffic across diverse mission environments. From Air Traffic Control (ATC) to Missile Defense, it provides mission-critical insights through sensor fusion and tailored visualization. Despite its robust capabilities, VigilantHalo lacked a comprehensive training program. Users struggled to grasp and articulate its full potential, limiting both operational efficiency and sales impact.
By developing comprehensive training materials and methods, I aimed to achieve an increase in usability retention, allowing warfighters and business development (BD) members to fully grasp and effectively communicate the complex capabilities of VigilantHalo.

Human Needs Analysis: Understanding User Behavior & Frustrations
To ensure a truly human-centered design, I conducted extensive research:
BD Team Feedback → BD members felt unequipped to communicate VigilantHalo’s capabilities, making sales conversations difficult.
End-User Pain Points → Warfighters needed a structured, hands-on approach to master the system’s intricacies.
Competitor Analysis → Examining industry-standard training tools revealed gaps in interactivity, engagement, and accessibility.

Key User Frustrations
• Training was limited to a few iPads, making it difficult to scale and access. • The material did not accommodate different learning styles, leading to low retention. • Navigation and information retrieval were cumbersome, increasing cognitive load.
Design Principles: Creating a Foundation for Excellence
To guide the redesign, I applied key UX principles:
• Simplicity → Streamlined navigation and content structure to eliminate confusion. • Clarity → Concise, well-organized information presentation to reduce cognitive load. • Delight → Interactive and immersive elements to engage users emotionally. • Scalability → A modular framework that grows with evolving training needs.

I developed a 3D interactive training environment using Vectary, creating a visually engaging, cross-platform experience accessible on multiple devices. To enhance usability, I applied progressive disclosure, gradually revealing complexity to prevent overwhelming users. The design featured a clear visual hierarchy, ensuring structured content organization for intuitive navigation. Additionally, VR integration enabled users to immerse themselves in the training process, fostering deeper comprehension and engagement.

Simplicity: Reducing Complexity Without Losing Depth
A core focus was making complex information digestible. I achieved this through: • Decluttering the Interface → Eliminating unnecessary steps and UI elements. • Grouping Related Actions → Structuring content logically for better navigation. • Direct System Integration → Linking detections to relevant training content in real time.

Great UX isn’t just functional—it’s delightful. To enhance engagement, I incorporated immersive 3D interactions, allowing for hands-on exploration of system components, making learning more engaging and intuitive. Additionally, I framed lessons using a narrative-driven approach, leveraging storytelling to improve recall and create a deeper emotional connection with the content.
The training system was designed to seamlessly integrate into BlueHalo’s broader ecosystem, ensuring coherence throughout its implementation. This involved employing a unified design language that aligned with existing BlueHalo branding, thereby providing a consistent user experience. Additionally, the system offered cross-platform accessibility, allowing users to engage with training on multiple devices, enhancing flexibility and convenience. Furthermore, the modular scalability of the training system ensured that it could evolve alongside VigilantHalo’s capabilities as they expanded, making it a dynamic component of the overall ecosystem.
User Experience Always Wins
The redesigned training system resulted in significant measurable improvements, including a 100% increase in usability retention among warfighters and stronger business development enablement, which contributed to enhanced sales conversions. Its scalability ensured future-proofing, allowing for continued growth in line with evolving needs. Additionally, the user experience saw notable victories, such as a simplified learning curve that reduced the time required for onboarding, increased engagement through interactive and immersive training, and positive feedback from stakeholders who cited improved training efficiency.
Reflections & Future Directions
This project marked a significant milestone in my journey as a designer, as it was my first experience creating a 3D environment in an accessible format. By shifting from a static, inaccessible training materials to a seamless, interactive experience, I was able to create a new and immersive experience for warfighters. This project reaffirmed a core UX principle: Great design is not just about usability—it’s about crafting experiences that inspire, educate, and empower.
